Ensuring the highest standards in homeopathic education and practice

The Faculty support the BHA efforts to keep homeopathy as a choice in the NHS

The British Homeopathic Association (BHA) with the Faculty and partners are challenging the NHS England Consultation on 'Items which should not be routinely prescribed in primary care'  including a proposal for future statutory guidance that homeopathy, in any form and in respect of any care pathway and whether in conjunction with traditional pharmaceutical medicines or otherwise, should not be prescribed to existing or new patients within the NHS. This consultation recently closed and a decision on its proposals is expected at the end of November 2017.

The Faculty are supporting the BHA in their application for a judicial review on the basis that the consultation ’was fundamentally flawed from the outset, in that the proposal was not formulated with input from any homeopathy experts or practitioners; it was not a genuine attempt to engage consultees (a decision having been ostensibly predetermined) and did not provide consultees with adequate information on which to provide a considered and informed response’.

The judicial review seeks, among other things, a declaration that NHS England has acted unlawfully in relation to its proposals, its failure to consult on them properly and to listen to patients.

A crowd funding website has been established to contribute to the cost of the judicial review.  The Faculty President, Dr Helen Beaumont, has a made significant donation.  We encourage all our members to support this effort - please follow the link below to donate and support the campaign.

Information for Faculty members/Prescribers:
Changes to pharmacy range

Weleda UK has tailor made ‘medicines to order’ for individual patients since the 1920s, and to ensure future supply of these important remedies the company must become more efficient and sustainable.

Working with an experienced team of doctors, Weleda has created a streamlined range of the most needed and frequently prescribed medicines, to ensure this more focused range of 400 tailor-made remedies is readily available for health care professionals and their patients.

In practice what this means is that Weleda will be able to reduce waiting times, ensuring availability of these 400 core medicines and further supporting the service with remedy training so health professionals can confidently prescribe them.

There are many positive benefits of these changes for patients, doctors and for Weleda. However some patients may need to transfer from their current medication to a similar alternative, and the Weleda Pharmacy team will work with prescribers to ensure any transition is seamless.

Weleda has also taken the decision to concentrate fully on the manufacture of Anthroposophic medicines and Anthroposophic potentising of handmade remedies. From 1 January 2018 manufacture of bespoke Homeopathic remedies will cease. This will allow for further development of Weleda’s range of NR (National Rules) registered Homeopathic products. Weleda’s standard over-the-counter range of GSL Homeopathic medicines and Homeopathic Oral Sprays will continue to be available.

These changes will not affect the availability of Weleda’s GSL Herbal medicines and over-the-counter P medicines (Pharmacy Only).
